Graduates demand more from companies

Travel hungry graduates have named British Airways as their dream employer for the second year running, according to this year’s total graduates poll by totaljobs.com, one of the UK’s leading recruitment websites.

Hot on its heels is the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which has shot up eight places from last year, suggesting that graduates are turning their back on the 9-5 in favour of broadening their horizons.

It seems that the public sector is finally giving private companies a run for their money when it comes to attracting young talent. Along with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office the NHS has also entered the top ten indicating that the public sector has shaken off the negative image associated with its careers and the sector is now offering what today’s graduates want.

We are witnessing the emergence of a new breed of graduate jobseeker that is demanding more from a job than just a good salary, says Keith Robinson, commercial director, totaljobs.com. Today’s graduates crave travel, excitement, challenges and variety and employers must meet these demands if they are to retain the pick of the bunch.

It is interesting to see that despite rocketing student debt traditionally well-paid jobs with companies like PriceWaterhouseCoopers and JP Morgan haven’t fared as well highlighting the fact that graduates are no longer attracted to stereotypical office jobs, despite the favourable salary that they offer.
