Getting your Rights at Work

.

Today, Acas launched a new series of free leaflets outlining your employment rights. From time off to equality discrimination, the leaflets provide a simple explanation of your rights at work, and signpost more detailed information. A new section on the Acas website provides a similar service.

There are now over 100 rights for workers and these can often seem overwhelming when trying to understand what you are and aren’t entitled to. The new Acas leaflets provide information on the main areas;
* pay
* time off
* parents at work
* discipline, grievances and dismissal
* equality and discrimination
* information and consultation
* trade unions and representation.

Acas Chief Executive, John Taylor, said

We all have rights at work, whatever our job but it can be confusing for both employers and employees to understand what they are. Acas has years of experience in providing practical up-to-date information on employment issues. Our helpline receives 750,000 calls a year, many from people wanting to find out about existing and new employment rights. In 2003 the top three issues were holiday entitlement, notice periods and sick pay.

Our new range of leaflets and web facility provide information on the key points people need to know. They group rights together so customers have the full picture and show where to go for more detailed explanation. If people need help on a particular issue they can always ring our helpline on 08457 47 47 47.
