Flexibility and International Opportunity Drive Millennial Career Choices

With Careers@Hilton Week underway, the Global Millennial Viewpoints Survey of 7,600 youths in 30 countries reveals that in the UK:

  • More than half (57%) of young Brits surveyed look for flexible work hours/ability to balance work and home life and nearly a third (30%) want the flexibility to move to different regions and countries
  • Four in ten (37%) young people asked want to see improved internship and apprenticeship opportunities
  • One in five young people (19%) surveyed are swayed by a job which includes the ability to volunteer or work towards a mission

Young people are craving jobs with greater flexibility and the ability to experience working in multiple regions and countries, according to new research from International Youth Foundation, in partnership with Hilton (NYSE: HLT).  Enhanced internships and apprenticeships, and the option to volunteer or work towards a mission, are among the most sought after attributes of a role, the survey of people aged 16-24 found. Nearly one in five (17%) young people surveyed are considering hospitality as a top three career choice.

Ben Bengougam, Senior Vice President, HR, Europe, Middle East & Africa, Hilton, said: “Young people want more than just a traditional job - whether it is international career expansion opportunities, world class training programmes or volunteering towards a wider social and environmental cause. There is a global crisis of youth unemployment and we are committed to highlighting the opportunities in hospitality. Careers@Hilton Week events are a unique opportunity for Hilton to inspire job seekers about careers in the hospitality industry, and to support them by providing guidance on the skills that are vital to succeed in the workplace and beyond.”

This week (15-21 May) is Careers@Hilton Week, Hilton’s annual global career event showcasing the many opportunities available in the hospitality industry for young people and other job seekers. Hilton hotels and corporate offices around the globe are hosting hundreds of events to inspire young people about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry. Careers@Hilton Week events range from CV clinics to networking, as well as presentations from current Team Members about their career paths in hospitality.

This initiative is part of Hilton’s Open Doors commitment, which aims to positively impact at least one million young people by 2019 by connecting them to opportunities in the hospitality industry, preparing them to reach their full potential or directly employing them.
