Alexa rankings of the top job sites for September

.

Overall it was a down month for many job sites. Note that when we say ìdownî we are referring to down in relation to rankings against other Internet properties per Alexa. And this month was way down, the worst one on record since we have been tracking the Alexa data (starting in August of 2002). Only 37 sites (28.2%) experienced a ranking gain this month, while 94 sites (61.9%) had a ranking decline. The TopJobSites.com Ranking Index was down a whopping 6.79% overall for the month. Job sites in general lost overall market share to the rest of the Internet.

Note that the Alexa ranking is based on a three month average, so this latest ranking includes early-June through early-September, traditionally a slow period for job search sites. We expect the rankings to begin to stabilize somewhat in September and possibly show some growth in October before Christmas shopping begins to push up the traffic of many of the retail/consumer sites.

However, while many sites were down for the month, category leaders Monster.com (general category), CollegeGrad.com (college category), and Dice (industry niche category) all showed positive gains for the month (7%, 5% and 3% respectively). Yes, the big keep getting bigger.

As a refresher, all of the rankings are based on the current Alexa overall ranking as of the date of update (in this case, the update was done yesterday and today). The Alexa overall ranking number is a three-month rolling average of the overall ranking of the site against all Internet properties. This overall ranking number is a combination of both the reach ranking and the page views ranking. Reach is based on the number of unique visitors in relation to the entire Internet (i.e. market share), while the page views ranking is based on the total number of page views (the combination of both the reach and the number of page views per visitor).
