New year on year figures show increase in UK maufacturing job postings of 2.28%

The Post-Brexit boom? New figures from Jobrapido show that the UK has reported a year-on-year growth of 2.28% of job postings in the manufacturing sector in 2016

  • New data from Jobrapido , the world’s leading job search engine, shows that there has been a 2.28% increase in job postings pertaining to the UK manufacturing sector throughout 2016
  • The figures show a significant amount of growth in the sector, despite widespread concerns over the future of industry after Brexit
  • However, regional variation suggests that areas like the North East and Scotland have seen less growth from the previous year

Jobrapido, the world’s leading search engine, have released new figures that indicate a significant amount of total jobs growth within the UK manufacturing sector. The data[1], showing the year-on-year growth of jobs posted, reveals that there were 2.28% more manufacturing jobs posted in 2016 than there were in the previous year.

The data gives further credibility to the recent PMI survey released by HIS Market and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, which revealed that in December the manufacturing sector experienced the best rates of growth for production over the past two and a half years[2]. According to the PMI survey, the UK manufacturing sector ended 2016 on a positive note, with the pace of jobs growth accelerating to the fastest in fourteen months in December.  The figures also may ease the worries of those concerned about the future of the UK manufacturing sector after Britain’s decision to leave the EU in June.

Regionally, however, there was some notable variation. Jobrapido noted an increase in job postings in most regions in the UK except for the North East where a year on year fall of -11.40% was recorded.

Similarly, there was a -11.15% drop in job postings in Scotland and -2.23% in the West Midlands. Every other region experienced an increase in the number of jobs posted since 2015. The regions that experienced the most growth included Wales with a 12.36% increase on 2015, Northern Ireland with an increase of 12.95% and the South East with 9.25% growth.

Rob Brouwer, CEO of Jobrapido, said:

“These figures suggest that Brexit appears to have had less of an effect on the manufacturing sector in the UK than some had previously anticipated. In fact, in some areas, such as Wales and the South East, the data reportedly shows that the manufacturing sector is in better state ending 2016 than it has been in previous years.  It will take some time before we fully know the effects of Brexit, but these figures now suggest that we’re at least starting 2017 with a steadier footing.”
