(DHS) Desperate Housewife Syndrome Revealed

02/04/2008 10:27:00

A national survey of 1,000 male fitness and leisure staff including gym instructors, tennis coaches and personal trainers has revealed that nearly two thirds of all leisure staff polled have experienced some form of ‘serious flirtation’ with a customer or client, with 34% having actually followed up on the flirtation with a date, or in some cases, an affair with a married woman.

The survey, carried out by leisurejobs.co.uk, the UK’s leading health and leisure job-board, also revealed that personal trainers (42%) and tennis coaches (30%) were the hottest targets of desperate housewives leaving yoga teachers (2%), golf coaches (1%) and spinner instructors (1%) hanging out to dry.

In fact the gym would appear to be the number one location for DHS (Desperate Housewife Syndrome), with over a third of male gym staff admitting to having had a relationship or date with a member of the opposite sex and 7% actually ending up married to their gym sweetheart.

Famous Fitness Fraternisers
It isn’t just mere mortals who fall for their gym instructors and personal trainers. Madonna fell for personal trainer, Carlos Leon and subsequently selected him to father her first-born Lourdes. Vanessa Feltz famously worked up a sweat with her personal trainer and Noel Edmonds wife had an affair with her cross-dressing pilates teacher.

Marc Moreso, MD of Leisurejobs.com has experienced ‘DHS’ for himself having worked as a tennis coach for many years. Marc comments, “People in these environments are awash with endorphins. Exercise makes you feel good, happy and sexier, so it’s no surprise that these things happen, and it’s a well-known perk of working in the health & leisure industry. Forget beer goggles it’s more like ‘Love in Lurex’ when it comes to the gym and let’s face it housewives are far less likely to fantasise about an accountant or bank teller!”

However, it is not just desperate housewives that flirt. In its research Leisurejobs.co.uk also discovered that nearly 1 in 3 male gym instructors and personal trainers polled said that they had used their position to flirt and ask clients out on dates.
