Job market data shows now is the optimal time to advertise your roles

While the first few months of the year are traditionally the busiest times for hiring, new data from CV-Library, the UK’s leading independent job board, shows that October is the second-most popular period for job applications.

In fact, analysis of over 84 million applications made over the past three years reveals that recruiters in the following areas could benefit from above-average applications this autumn:

  • Candidates in London make an average of 12.9% more applications in October
  • Brighton’s job hunters are the second most active at this time, with application rates being 5.4% above average in October
  • Bristol is also a flurry of candidate activity in October, as application rates are 3% higher
  • Finally, Southampton experiences a 1.6% jump in applications on average in October

Alongside this, candidates in the education sector make 9.9% more applications in October, design professionals 2.3% more and legal candidates 1.8% more.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library comments on the findings:

“That ‘back to school’ feeling is certainly ingrained in us from our younger years, encouraging many professionals to make a fresh start when autumn comes around. We know that this time of year is always a popular time for job searching, but our data shows the true extent of this trend across the UK.”

Further analysis shows that now is also a popular time for companies to advertise their roles online, with October seeing 9.9% more jobs on offer than average. This trend is widespread across the UK, with job adverts experiencing above-average hikes in the following locations in October:

  • Wales – 15.4% more jobs than average
  • West Midlands – 11.4% more jobs than average
  • North West – 11.3% more jobs than average
  • East Midlands – 11.1% more jobs than average
  • Scotland – 11% more jobs than average
  • East of England – 10.2% more jobs than average
  • South West – 10% more jobs than average
  • South East – 8.5% more jobs than average
  • North East – 7.5% more jobs than average
  • Northern Ireland – 5.7% more jobs than average

Biggins continues:

Naturally, this time of year is also a busy time for recruitment and while the market is slightly tumultuous right now, it’s definitely an ideal time to think about your hiring efforts. Whether you’re recruiting for Christmas temps, or looking to bring more permanent employees on board, consider what you can do to stand out and attract more candidates, to your roles.”
