WorkLink shortlisted for global recruitment award

The University of Birmingham’s Student Temp Agency, WorkLink, has been shortlisted for a global recruitment award, thanks to innovative software developed by Eploy®.

WorkLink, which helps students find on-campus work, is vying for the Best Innovation title in the 2014 Global Recruiter Awards.

Since it was launched in 2012, WorkLink has undergone rapid growth with a 788% increase in student placements and more than 39,000 timesheets being processed via the Eploy system, saving the agency thousands of hours of administration time.

Eploy co-founders Chris Bogh and Paul Burgess, both of whom are graduates of the University of Birmingham, said: “The success of WorkLink has been incredible. Placements have risen from 900 to 8,000 annually and it is an excellent example of the tangible benefits that job shops can bring to universities and students alike.

“By implementing the right software, we have shown that the administrative implications of connecting potentially thousands of students with hundreds of vacancies need not be a burden.”

WorkLink asked Eploy to implement its recruitment software so it could more easily connect students that want part-time, temporary jobs on campus, while they undertake their studies.

A front-end portal allows students to browse and apply for vacancies, while a CRM database enables the WorkLink team to streamline their operations and save hours of manual processing and filing. A dedicated portal for internal hirers means timesheets can be processed quickly and conveniently. With integration with the internal payroll system in place, student payments are made on time and hassle-free.

The system is also able to work proactively with Eploy’s automated features.  For example, students are notified of relevant vacancies via email or SMS as they become live, with no additional administration work for the WorkLink team.

“With more than 38,000 eligible students and 500 hiring managers at the university, a manual recruitment process wasn’t an option but our system helped to streamline the process so that it was easy to manage and didn’t require significant administrative input,” says Chris.

“That was important because its students really need to be able to access work experience and the university is in a position to offer it.

“Higher Education has changed in recent years and employers are increasingly looking for more than just a degree on a graduate’s CV, they want to see work experience and skills that will translate into the workplace.

“We’re thrilled that WorkLink has been such a success and are over the moon that it’s – and the Eploy system – is shortlisted for the Best Innovation at this year’s Global Recruiter Awards”

Tracy Murphy, Recruitment Manager at the University of Birmingham and a member of the NASES Executive Board, added: “We are delighted with the success of WorkLink; and the implementation of the Eploy system has really supported the success.

“It is fantastic that a University agency, purely focused on student work, is recognised at this level,” said Tracy, who is now using her experience to help other universities set up a similar internal agency structure.

The 2014 Global Recruiter Awards takes place at Café de Paris in London on June 26.
