West Sussex growing ëde-stressí - 10/2001

.

The S-word, ëStressí, is the 21st century blight affecting thousands. And it keeps on growing, affecting the individual, families and businesses. Everyone is looking for ways to reduce stress and deep in the heart of West Sussex, a county whose downs and seashore seem naturally calming, Rentokil, the global environmental service company is leading the way in developing an alternative solution to stress in the workplace.

Studies led by Rentokilís Tropical Plants Research Department, the only one of its kind in the UK, located at the companyís headquarters near East Grinstead, has proved strategically placed plants in an office environment can help to calm the frantic and even help build self-confidence.

Research sponsored by Rentokil, has been undertaken in Universities using a variety of experiments to measure the impact plants can have on individuals. Participants in one survey had their heart rate, blood pressure and skin conductivity measured over a period of time. Those in an office with plants showed noticeably less stress levels and their recovery from stress was faster than colleagues in a ìplantlessî office.

Self-confidence is also increased by the presence of plants and inhibitions are reduced. Office workers also claim to feel calmer and more motivated to work.

Besides the psychological impact, the plant research also investigated the impact of air quality in buildings. Plagued with indifferent air conditioning, or draughty windows, plants have been shown to improve air quality.
