The highest levels of electronic security fraud - 04/2001

-

UK businesses had the highest levels of electronic security fraud in Europe last year, according to research by KPMG. They said the survey might actually understate the problem since some firms aren't eager to reveal figures on electronic fraud.

In the UK, 14 per cent of companies admitted to suffering electronic security breaches in the last year. India suffers a worse problem, with 23 per cent saying fraud occurred. The international average is 9 per cent.

Most companies do not run checks on the organisations that maintain their e-commerce sites, the research revealed. Executives are generally concerned about external hackers, when internal breaches as a result of lack of training, incorrect procedure, dishonest staff or disgruntled former employees pose bigger threats.

Most of the hackers from the last year were not discovered or punished.
