Telegraph Media Group launches second annual stem competition in association with Babcock International

Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has launched the second annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition, following the success of the inaugural event last year

Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has launched the second annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition, following the success of the inaugural event last year.

A prize of £25,000 will be awarded to the individual or team of students who are the overall winners, alongside a bespoke mentoring and work placement programme which will be run by Babcock International Group.

The competition is targeted at undergraduate university and higher-education students who will be able to enter five different categories through a dedicated portal, telegraph.co.uk/stemawards now live on The Telegraph website until 15th March.

The five categories are Technology, sponsored by BAE Systems; Design in the Built Environment, Sponsored by Atkins Global; Pharmaceuticals, sponsored by GSK; Automotive, sponsored by McLaren; and Energy, sponsored by SEMTA.

The competition is designed to challenge first, second, third and fourth year STEM students to come up with an innovative idea that will help to make positive changes within a particular industry. Five category winners and one overall winner will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will be held in London in June 2015.

Last year the award was won by Holly Bishop, from the University of Plymouth, who invented a solution to medication non-adherence in the form of a medical wristband.

The competition will be supported through a newspaper supplement that will be published this Sunday and through a dedicated STEM channel available through telegraph.co.uk/stemawards  and further editorial content.

The Telegraph’s STEM competition aims to attract both the younger generation and the wider public to the work carried out by STEM-based industries.

James Lancaster, Director, Specialist Sales, TMG said: “The Telegraph’s inaugural STEM competition last year was a resounding success and we are delighted to be launching it for the second time, with the support of Babcock International. Holly was a very worthy winner last year and we are sure that this year’s entries will fill us with similar optimism about the future of the STEM industries. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our five sponsors – BAE Systems, Atkins Global, GSK, McLaren and SEMTA – who have provided valuable support to our awards. We look forward to receiving this year’s entries!”

The competition is also supported by HEERA and Universities UK.
