Recycled domain names for sale

Entrepeneurial opportunities

Highly desirable domain names are becoming available again after companies have gone into liquidation. Web addresses such as urbanspaces.co.uk and artdirect.co.uk are now available on a government website. Addresses sold last year include science.co.uk, energy.co.uk and chocoholics.co.uk.

These recycled domain names may be of interest to individuals or companies wishing to launch a new online venture or just looking for a new domain name which has been unobtainable.

Sarah English, solicitor in the Company and Commercial Unit at Laytons explains; ìWhen a limited company in England or Wales goes into liquidation and is dissolved, all its assets, which traditionally means its property but also includes domain names, trademarks and patents, which have not been disposed of, pass to the Crown. The Treasury Solicitorís Department has collected these domain names and are now selling them via their own auction website.î Once the domain name is listed on the website interested parties have a month to submit a bid for it. The Treasury Solicitor needs to obtain an open market value for the domain names so the highest bid wins, with all bidders being notified as to the outcome at the end of each month.

Sarah English adds a word of warning ìAs with all domain name purchases, it is important to check the name you are buying and the purchasing terms.î
