Motorola tries online recruitment - 08/2001

Now you donít even have to bother getting dressed...

Motorola, after it sacked nearly 30,000 people in the past couple of months, has turned to online recruitment because it is unable to fill technical positions internally.

The handset manufacturer is encouraging applicants, with backgrounds in specialist areas such as mechanical, hardware and software engineering, to submit a CV digitally for a range of jobs based in Munich and Basingstoke.

After the CVs have been screened and filtered, hiring managers will interview the successful candidates via a chat-room, before inviting them for a face-to-face meeting at one of the sites.

Julia Calleja, a strategic sourcing specialist for Motorola, said this method saved on travel costs and time for both the applicant and interviewer attending preliminary interviews.

Calleja added: ìThis new method allows us to cut the time from three months to only four to six weeks.î

This method of recruitment, together with other cost initiatives and including the job cuts, is hoped to save Motorola a total of $1.8bn for the year.
