Internet use set to soar - 02/2001

-

reregulation of the telecommunications sector, higher phone penetration, and cheaper web access are expected to drive growth in the Polish Internet market over the next seven years.

A recent report from Czech consultancy firm Wood & Co. predicted that Internet penetration in Poland would increase from the current rate of 13.5 percent to 50 percent in 2007.

Even with this growth, analysts forecast consolidation among Polish Internet portals, saying that the country can support only three portals at most.

Among recent entrants to the Polish Internet market is Gielda Energii, an online power exchange. The exchange, which is open to domestic generators and distributors, large industrial users, and independently licensed traders, will allow users to buy and sell small amounts of excess power.

Meanwhile, US-based Citibank is working to develop the Polish B2B sector through its new online venture, CitiCommerce.com. The bank currently has a Polish client base of 6,000 multinationals and 2,000 local companies.
