IDC Research: IT market picking up in Europe

IT spending will increase more later this year and into next year

Jan 22 2002: IDC believes the IT market in Western Europe will grow 6.4 percent this year, up slightly from 5.5 percent in 2001.

Growth this year will still be considerably down on 2000, when growth reached 9.4 percent. IDC says if the economy picks up, IT spending will increase more later this year and into next year.

The most resilient sector continues to be IT services, particularly outsourcing. It will be higher spending on software, however, that will drive a rebound in this market, particularly as firms move towards integrated enterprise applications.

IDC singled out the UK, Ireland, and the Benelux countries in particular, saying they would have slower growth this year than in previous years.
