Home net users increasing in Asia

The number of at-home Internet users in Asia is increasing steadily, according to NetValue.

Between October and November 2001, the number of home Internet users in Korea grew from 14.94 million to 15.1 million.

In Taiwan, that figure increased from 5.49 million to 5.52 million, whereas the figure for Hong Kong grew to 1.43 million from 1.41 million. In Singapore, the home Internet population grew from 907,000 to 920,000.

NetValue also found that 82.5 percent of Koreans visit ecommerce sites, as do 71.1 percent of those in Hong Kong, 70.1 percent of users in Singapore, and 60.5 percent of users in Taiwan.

Instant messaging is the most popular online activity in both Hong Kong and Singapore. It is used by 63 percent of the online population in Hong Kong, and 51.4 percent in Singapore. Audio-video applications are the most popular in Korea, where they are used by 81.3 percent of the online population.

Yahoo is clearly the most popular Internet property in Asia. NetValue found that the most popular sites in Hong Kong are yahoo.com, yahoo.com.hk, and microsoft.com.

In Taiwan, the top three is comprised of yahoo.com.tw, yahoo.com, and pchome.com.tw. Koreaís top three sites are daum.net, yahoo.com.kr, and dreamwiz.com, while in Singapore, yahoo.com, msn.com, and passport.com are the most popular sites.
