Gender pay gap: "organisations are desperate to find talent that isn’t pale, male and stale"

Mike Taylor Managing Director at Business Performance and Leadership Consultancy Accelerating Experience comments:

“There has never been a better time for women to negotiate pay rises and seek promotion. With the current gender balance, organisations are desperate to find talent that isn’t pale, male and stale.

Tip on being open in the workplace:

“Being open is difficult when the reality is that more often than not men are higher paid in some job roles, compared to women in the same role and women may not want to approach the conversation. Women need to be confident in conversations when talking to colleagues and there is no time like the present to have a go at talking to colleagues openly.”

Tip on speaking to colleagues over pay:

“Often women have more solidarity and speak to one another about what they earn. However, these types of conversations should also be with male colleagues and women should be prepared to ask the question and have the confidence to do so.”

Tip on bringing up pay in meetings:

“What is important in these types of meetings is that you ask your employer for parity of pay, putting the onus back on the employer. In these types of discussions it is vital to focus on your strengths and the value you bring to the company.”
