Flipping for flexibility - 03/2001

-

Flexibility can be both a help and a hindrance as far as recruiting and retention are concerned. Studies have shown that employers who refuse to pen flexible work-schedule policies risk losing female employees, while companies that offer flextime to some employees and not as readily to others may breed resentment in the workforce. Flextime has traditionally been offered to women to balance the demands of work and family, but new studies have shown that men are just as interested in custom-tailored work schedules. It's usually in the best interest of both the company and employees to provide flexibility options, including part-time, job sharing, telecommuting, flextime and compressed schedules. To avoid employee flextime friction, ensure any policy your company incorporates is completely spelled out and available across the board.
