Europeís confidence in riding the storm - 05/2001

-

Irish workers feel less secure and more concerned about the safety of their current jobs than their European co-workers due to the downward turn of the world economy ñ according to the most recent online poll conducted across Europe by Monster, the worldís leading career network. Only 38% of Irish workers who voted on the local Monster.ie site feel secure in their jobs, this figure is contrary to the figure of Pan European figure of 79% of European workers who claim to feel secure or only mildly concerned in their current positions.

In excess of 10,000 visitors responded to the survey, carried out simultaneously on Monsterís nine European sites. While the majority of them showed various degrees of confidence in the European job market, the Monster online poll did uncover that one European worker in five is anxious that the impending slowdown may threaten their positions in the workplace.
ìThe results of this survey show that the majority of staff throughout Europe are enjoying security even in todayís economic climate. Itís interesting to note however the variation in results from Irish voters on the Monster.ie site. Irish workers have lived under the threat of an overheating economy for some time now. This is a turning and churning economy and the reality is there will always be employees in certain industries who feel more threatened by the downturn than othersî - Monster.ieís managing director Alan Townsend commented. ìEmployees are increasingly aware of market conditions and the effect they can have on current positions, armed with this knowledge employees can act accordingly.î Among the countries involved in Monster.comís survey, Netherlands has the lowest percentage of workers who were disquieted over the possibility of losing their job (8.32%), followed by Belgium (12.37%) whilst the UK (30.99%) and Ireland (26.10%) are the most distressed at the prospect of being laid off. Interestingly, 44% of Italyís voters registered that they felt there had been no change to their job security in the face of a possible global recession.

The results of this poll are based on votes cast by Monsterís European users from March 26, 2001 to April 9, 2001. Only one vote per user is counted toward the final tabulation.
