Last week Oracle made headlines as a Gartner report showed that they had overtaken IBM, as the world’s no. 2 software seller; with Microsoft still the global leader.

Gartner’s report gave a detailed account of the recent progress of the leading global software organisations, with Oracle’s 3.4% growth over the last twelve months being one of the decisive factors in this major change to the rankings, against IBM’s growth of just 1.4%.

Gartner’s report attributed Oracle’s strong growth in recent months to global trends around big data and analytics, as well as the strength of its cloud based applications.

Perhaps of equal significance in Gartner’s report was the news that Salesforce was also listed within the top 10 software vendors for the first time. With changes at the top and bottom of the rankings illustrating how competitive the Technology Sales arena is now becoming.

InterQuest Division IQ Sales People, who work with organisations and professionals recruiting across a diverse range of sales focused technology skills, have gained firsthand experience of the increasingly competitive nature of the technology arena; with Sales Director Matthew Parker noting:

‘There has clearly been a significant increase in competition amongst software’s big players. As recruiters for Sales Professionals in some of the most impacted areas like ERP and Business Intelligence, we have seen a visible increase in demand for a greater diversity of skills and product knowledge.’
