Broadband takes off in Hong Kong - 12/2001

Over 1.2 million of Hong Kongís 3.5 million Internet subscribers now have broadband access, reports the South China Morning Post.

IDC says that broadband subscribers there have leapt 233 percent since last year when there were 383,000 broadband subscribers out of a total of 2.6 million Internet users.

The broadband penetration rate in Hong Kong is now the second highest in Asia-Pacific after South Korea, which has 7.54 million broadband subscribers out of an online population of 14 million.

By 2005, there will be 21.8 million broadband subscribers in South Korea, and 2.11 million in Hong Kong.

The number of broadband subscribers in China will reach 8.3 million by then, up from 437,000 this year, and 68,000 last year.
