74 percent of students miss out on internships advertised in the first semester

Evaluating five years of data on how students look for internships through www.e4s.co.uk, many students are missing out on internships with companies that only look for interns in the autumn semester.

Employment4students (E4S) has revealed that thousands of students will miss out on internships with companies that solely advertise in the autumn semester.

Based on five years of information gathering, E4S states that the majority of internship-related searches typically occur in the spring semester, missing out on internships available from September to December.

46 percent of internship-related searches take place between January and April, typically following a lull in December where only 6.7 percent of overall internship searches are made.

As such, 74 percent of internship searches will miss out on positions advertised solely on the autumn semester, typically from corporate organisations including financial groups, law firms and government institutions.

Conversely, an increasing amount of companies are opening internship applications early in the academic year in a bid to secure the most committed students. Many advertise positions in popular sectors including business, IT and marketing solely in September-October including Telefonica and GCHQ.

Other organisations including the Bank of England began campaigns in early September, with the aforementioned GCHQ beginning before the academic year had started and students have returned to university. While GCHQ’s campaign ended in early October, the Bank of England will continue to accept applications until December.

These internships are often overlooked by students who have not begun looking for internship positions, and will miss out on 87.5 percent of searches.

Chris Eccles, managing director and co-founder of E4S, commented: “While companies like Telefonica and GCHQ will miss out on applications from students who decide to begin their search from January onwards, feedback has been extremely positive and it looks like the autumn period is set to become increasingly competitive.”
