<![CDATA[PeoplePerHour.com reveals Top Ten business service searches]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/peopleperhour_com_reveals_top_ten_busine ‘Web design’ tops list of most commonly-searched keywords on Europe’s biggest online business marketplace. ‘Internet marketing’ climbs 19 places in past quarter.

PeoplePerHour.com today unveiled the top 10 of the one million searches conducted on the site per month. By a considerable distance, ‘web design’ is the most searched business service on the site, outstripping the next most popular search term (‘graphic design’) by nearly 30 percent.

PeoplePerHour.com’ Top Ten Search Terms (February 2010)

  1. Web Design
  2. Graphic Design
  3. IT Support
  4. Sales Agent
  5. Web Development
  6. 3D Design
  7. Project Manager
  8. Design
  9. Internet Marketing
  10. Graphic Designer

The popularity of ‘web design’ has accelerated in the past three months, reflecting the increasingly pivotal role digital marketing is playing in UK small businesses. This is supported by the fact that the fastest climber in the past quarter was ‘internet marketing’, which rose 19 places to ninth in the overall table.

PeoplePerHour.com’s founder believes that the rapid rise in demand for digital marketing services reflects a returning sense of confidence in the UK small business sector.

“These figures indicate that after a tough 18 months doing everything to remain solvent, increasing numbers of small businesses are choosing to invest in developing their most important marketing tool – their websites,” suggests PeoplePerHour.com founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou.

“In the recession, our users’ main priority was investing fast-return initiatives, such as sales,” he continues. “Small businesses are now feeling confident enough to implement long-term marketing strategies. In many cases, this evidently begins with a website overhaul.”

According to Thrasyvoulou, the dramatic rise in demand for internet marketing services highlights the growing value of digital disciplines amongst small businesses.

“The benefits of the various internet marketing skills – Search Engine Optimisation, social media campaigns, Google Adwords etc – are now being recognised by the majority of small businesses,” says Thrasyvoulou. “Internet marketing was once the preserve of the most progressive, forward-thinking businesses. It is now a central element of most small businesses’ marketing strategies.”

<![CDATA[Recession has bruised the Nation's CVs]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/recession_has_bruised_the_nations_cvs_re Around one in four (24%) professionals were forced to take jobs they were over-qualified for or in a sector unrelated to their core career during the recession, according to the latest Employment Study from international recruiters Badenoch & Clark.

The figures highlight a key challenge for professionals across the nation as we emerge from the recession. A third (34%) of those surveyed have been in a role which hasn’t challenged them or enabled them to learn new skills since the recession took hold.

The issue is particularly acute for those starting out in their careers, with the under 24’s hardest hit. A third (33%) of this age group has been forced to take a job which they were over qualified for.

Unsurprisingly, professionals in the legal (20%) and banking and financial services (17%) sectors were more likely than any other sector to take a job that was totally unrelated to their core career.

As the fragile economic recovery continues, it seems many are using the greater degree of stability as an opportunity to move jobs. Around two fifths (41%) of professionals plan to change their job in the next twelve months, hoping to find roles more suitable to their ability.

Neil Wilson, managing director of Badenoch & Clark, comments: “What this study reveals is the extent to which the recession has negatively impacted on people’s career plans.

“Professionals with ‘bruised CVs’ need to think carefully about how this will impact on the future of their career, and start taking every opportunity to address the situation now.

“If you’ve had to take a temporary side step, it’s important to use everything at your disposal to help get your career back on track. Keeping in touch with old colleagues, reading your trade media, seeking advice from peers, colleagues and recruiters – all of these things are ways to regain control of a career that may have been temporarily derailed by the necessities of the recession.

“Whatever you do, do something. The downturn has bruised an awful lot of CVs – getting back on the front foot with your career is the only way to heal them.”

<![CDATA[Oil and Gas professionals strike it rich in the UK]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/oil_and_gas_professionals_strike_it_rich Oil and gas professionals are better paid compared to workers in the majority of other industries, according to a survey by Hays Oil & Gas in partnership with Oil & Gas Job Search. The average oil & gas professional in the UK earns £92,000, compared to a UK salary average of around £25,000. Added to this, over two thirds of employers surveyed are planning to offer salary increases over the next twelve months.

The Hays Oil & Gas Global Salary Guide is based on over 7,000 responses and presents the average salaries of oil and gas professionals working across more than 30 countries and 20 discipline areas. The results prove that oil and gas professionals have remained a valuable commodity despite the global financial crisis. Currently across the UK demand for oil & gas professionals is increasing and in London there is high demand for senior level exploration geophysicists and reservoir engineers.

Eliot Davies, Director at Hays Oil & Gas, explains: “With an average permanent salary in the UK nearly four times as much as the average UK employee, oil and gas professionals are earning a premium. Although the UK isn’t in the top five highest paying countries; Australia, USA, Azerbaijan, Canada and the Netherlands pay their oil & gas professionals the highest sums, it is an attractive option for candidates. Oil and gas is truly a global industry, with professionals migrating around the world in search of the next project, and our survey clearly confirms this. Professionals in the industry are well paid, highly skilled and highly mobile,” continues Davies.

“When Hays requested Oil and Gas Job Search’s assistance with the survey, it was with a great deal of excitement that we accepted the challenge,” said Duncan Freer, Managing Director of Oil and Gas Job Search. Our reach, along with Hays’ expertise in compiling such studies, gives us confidence that the guide is an accurate reflection of the industry we work in.”

Highlights of survey results:

• Average permanent salary globally is £50,000

• Average contract salary for local professionals globally is £63,000

• Those working within subsea/pipelines are the big winners, earning a global average of £72,000 per annum

<![CDATA[‘Create a Career Strategy and Avoid Long Term Unemployment’ says PCS Executive]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/create_a_career_strategy_and_avoid_long The latest report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals the state of the job market at the close of 2009 and creates a confused picture. Unemployment numbers appear to have fallen but the rate of employment has fallen also.

The number of people taking part time roles or working on a self employed basis has risen, as well as an increase in the ‘inactive workforce’ and the number of people out of work for over 12 months has continued to increase putting figures at a record high since 1997.

The ‘inactive workforce’ saw a dramatic rise which is representative of two things: more young people are choosing to study rather than face a tough job market and, more worryingly, people are giving up on their job search all together. The rise in the ‘inactive workforce’ is in direct correlation with the number of people out of work for over 12 months and the drop in claimants of jobseeker’s allowance.

On a positive note, the number of vacancies advertised has risen quite substantially representing business confidence as more companies begin to invest in creating a stronger workforce.

However, with the government planning public sector job cuts the repercussions on the economy and the job market is set to take a further nosedive later in the year. By creating some foundations now the support will give you security when things worsen.

Simon Hudson, Regional Director at PCS Executive commented, saying ‘It’s saddening to think that people are becoming despondent with their career prospects and have struggled for so long that their only option is to give up.’

‘The statistics show that people need to rethink their strategy if they want to succeed in this difficult market and creating a strategy early on, before money runs out and morale slips, is integral to avoid dire straits.’

PCS Executive believe that despite the economic downturn and the continued uncertainty surrounding the job market, being able to push your career forward is still possible. ‘By creating a strategy you can cut your job search in half and still land a role that is right for you and fits with your objectives,’ continued Simon.

<![CDATA[Record UK Limited Company Contractor Growth]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/record_uk_limited_company_contractor_gro 2010 has seen a record rise in the number of contractors forming limited companies according to the UK’s largest accountancy firm for Contractors and Freelancers – SJD Accountancy.

The new decade has seen an unprecedented 70% increase over 2009 in contractor limited companies being created.

This latest statistic must come as no surprise when you bear in mind the UK has had almost two solid years of negative job news and high profile mass redundancies.

It now appears companies and government departments are turning away from hiring full time employees and thereby burdening their balance sheets with long term commitments, and are instead turning to the highly mobile and dynamic contractor market, albeit at higher daily rates of pay compared to their full time employees.

Simon Dolan, Managing Director of SJD Accountancy commented, ”We’re not surprised in the least and although the contractor market had been heavily impacted by the recession, it makes perfect sense for both new and suspended projects to be relaunched and managed by contractors. Contractors offer a far more immediate solution to companies wanting to move swiftly and once again begin to build their businesses again. I’m sure the number of contractors will continue to rise throughout 2010 and I am sure many people who were affected by redundancies will also turn to contracting after having their confidence in the so called ‘permanent job’ market shattered.

Despite the looming election and current state of UK plc debt issues, the FTSE 100 has risen steadily in the last few weeks and there does seem to be a renewed confidence in the market. Let’s hope more organisations reignite projects and we can once again return to economic growth.”

<![CDATA[Autotech implements eArcu to help hire the best people]]> http://www.onrec.com/news/autotech_implements_earcu_to_help_hire_t “Having previously used i-Grasp, I was amazed at how much recruitment technology had leapt forward with eArcu,” enthuses Andy Robinson, MD Autotech Controls. “Our recruitment processes are devolved to a fair degree, and so we needed something that was really simple, tempting and informative for our managers. They are fully focussed on their own areas of expertise and don’t have a lot of time to devote to hiring. eArcu provides intelligent prioritisation so that they can see at a glance where they need to get involved or take a decision. This means that we get our new hires in place faster, and more importantly, in place faster than our competitors.”

eArcu also removes administration so that the Resourcing Team can provide advice on how to get the best results. They have a graphical dashboard that tracks the whole process and suggests where they need to intervene to optimise the process.

Andy Randall, CEO eArcu, is very excited about working with Autotech

“For many high tech companies, it’s not their first experience of recruitment technology and they are looking to see some substantial improvements compared to the previous generation of software.”

“Companies like Autotech are pushing the boundaries in their own field and they want partners who match their aspirations and quality ethic. Often the first exposure a new employee gets to the organisation they are joining is through the recruitment experience. Opinions and perceptions are formed during the recruitment process about the kind of organisation they are joining. If candidates interact with 10 year old technology during their application to work for an organisation, that leaves the impression that the organisation itself will be using 10 year old technology. This is 2010 and to be the best in 2010 you need today’s technology.”
